Join Us for the 2025 Sicangu Food Summit!
This Indigenous Peoples Day, we invite you to celebrate with us at the 3rd Annual Sicangu Food Summit — a day dedicated to celebrating our traditional foodways and strengthening our local food system.
📅 Monday, October 13, 2025
📍 Todd County Middle School, Mission, SD
⏰ 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM
🎫 The event is FREE and open to the public. No registration required.
Spend the day learning, connecting, and celebrating with hands-on workshops and local speakers. This year’s sessions include topics like seed saving, poultry production, traditional plant teas, and soil biodiversity, with a keynote from Victor Makes Room for Them, Jr.
Enjoy a locally sourced meal prepared by Randee’s Kitchen! We got a sneak peek at the menu — and let’s just say you’re not going to want to miss it.
This event is made possible thanks to the dedication of our planning team (shout out to Michelle Haukaas, Echo Clairmont, Lydia Yellow Hawk, Suni Wooden Knife, Sara Fielder, Victoria Contreras, and Karen Moore) and the generous support of our partners:
Sanford Health – returning as a sponsor for a second year
University of South Dakota Department of Sustainability and Environment – sponsoring the community meal
Farm Sanctuary and the Presbyterian Hunger Program – providing grant support for this year’s summit
Come celebrate, learn, and help build a more sovereign and sustainable food future for the Sicangu Oyate!
While the date for next year’s Tour de Rez is yet to be determined, due to community feedback, we anticipate it will make a strong comeback!
Plus, Save the Date for Another Community Celebration
(and FREE bison meat distribution)
It’s hard to believe, but the Wolakota Buffalo Range is celebrating five years since the return of the first bison to the land! Much of what we talked about five years ago is coming to be: improved grassland health, increased biodiversity, youth engagement and cultural activities, and community access to bison meat.
Join us for a community meal and gathering to honor this milestone! We will also be offering UTV rides out to view the 1,100 head herd! Bring your family, friends, and appetite — everyone is welcome.
Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more details at the event gets closer.
For now, just mark your calendars for:

📍 Wolakota Buffalo Range
Our Food Sovereignty team will also be on site offering free Wolakota bison meat to community members through their Relatives Feeding Relatives program. Just last night, they distributed nearly 1,000 pounds of bison meat to roughly 120 families in ONLY ONE HOUR!
Disclaimer: Due to the remote nature of the ranch, unpredictable weather patterns, unknown number of attendees, and a commitment to minimize stress on the bison, we cannot guarantee that all attendees will be able to view the bison but we’ll do our best!
