Reimagining “Workforce Development”How we’re building on our success with a new Career Foundations Cohort!
Last week, the 7Gen Interns gathered to celebrate the close of their 7-week program. The internship covers foundational skills such as communication, project management, financial literacy, and social-emotional intelligence, while also incorporating concepts like food sovereignty, civic engagement, learning the Lakota language, and health & wellness activities.
Too often, “workforce development” programs fail to acknowledge the realities our community faces: limited local employment, low educational attainment and expectations, lack of culturally grounded career options, and deep systemic barriers that make it difficult for our people to participate — let alone thrive — in the workplace.
At Sicangu Co, we know the solution has to be holistic and adapted to our community. While job skills are essential, so too is a grounding in culture, identity, and community. Our programs aim to do more than prepare people for the workplace. We are also helping young people build confidence, heal from intergenerational trauma, build social-emotional skills, and find purpose.
Since 2022, 68 community members have graduated from one of our workforce programs, and nearly a third have returned for more or stepped into full-time jobs.
It’s clear that participants finish our programs with a greater sense of hope and perception of opportunity within our community.
Nowhere is that more apparent than our 7Gen Internship, which wrapped up earlier in July. Participants explored financial literacy, food sovereignty, Lakota spirituality and culture, and professionalism—all while receiving mentorship, meals, and transportation. Each intern also designed and implemented a community impact project. The program has been so effective that it was honored with a national award.
It’s on that foundation that, we’re proud to announce the next expansion of this work: the Career Foundations Cohort!
The Career Foundations Cohort (CFC) is a six-month workforce development program designed for young adults (18+) with a high school diploma or GED. Built on the foundation of the 7Gen Internship, this new cohort goes deeper—with more time, more training, and more support to help participants launch meaningful careers or pursue further education.
What makes the Career Foundations Cohort different?
On-the-job training in real-world roles that match each participant’s interests and strengths
A Customer Service Certificate from Sinte Gleska University to enhance communication and service skills
In-Depth learning sessions, including immersive workshops in Lakota language, equine therapy for emotional wellness, and cultural teachings to support spiritual growth
Holistic support like transportation, meals, and mentorship throughout the program
Our goal is to prepare the next generation of Sicangu professionals to live lives rooted in confidence, culture, and community. Whether participants go on to start businesses, join the workforce, or pursue higher education, we want them to carry their full selves into whatever path they choose.
Congratulations to the 2025 7Gen
Interns!
Alexis White Hat is a former intern who now leads summer program. Also pictured here are Neola and Madison. They were both also past 7Gen Interns who returned this year to serve as Assistant Summer Intern Mentors (ASIM). We’d also like to thank Colleen (not pictured) for serving as an ASIM throughout the summer.
