Ptanyetu Oiyokikpi Happy Fall🍂

Here at Siċaŋġu Co, we love this time of year. Our gardens are blooming with fresh produce, the rewards of our care and attention over the last few months. Every harvest season, we are reminded of the bounty that exists in our homelands, and how lucky we are to be in relationships with Unci Maka. How grateful we are to help her grow that which sustains us.

Tour de Rez is Back!🥕🍅

This year marked another year of the annual Tour de Rez! This is a community event where local farms/homesteads/gardens open their space to the public for a day, and community members drive around and visit the various sites that are spread throughout Rosebud. We love having the ability to connect local growers and producers with community members, and to provide an opportunity for learning and connection through food.

We did things a little differently this year. In the past, the event was a single day, and we did a lot of driving and mostly just viewing the different gardens. This year, we split the event into two days, one in August and two in September. This was for a couple of reasons. We wanted to make it easier for more people to attend, and we also wanted to be able to spend more time at each site.

In fact, we went from a planned two days to three days this year! There were so many producers who wanted to participate, we were lucky enough to add an extra day. In total, we visited nine different farms, gardens, and homesteads throughout Rosebud. Two of the farms are alumnae of the Food Sovereignty Initiative's Local Foods Capacity Program!

Since we had more time at each site, community members participated in a variety of workshops. Some of the topics included: seeding saving and seed starting, harvesting leafy greens, making spice blends with harvested herbs, planting garlic, and creating a DIY weed killer!

It's days like these that remind us about the importance of food sovereignty, in all its forms and iterations. The work we do at Siċaŋġu Co, through our Food Sovereignty Initiative and other programs, is so important. But equally important is decentralizing knowledge, sharing wisdom with community members so that they can share with others. It's a ripple effect that keeps growing. Siċaŋġu Co alone cannot achieve true food sovereignty for the Oyate. To do this, we must have educated and empowered community members who are growing food, raising chicken or cattle, beekeeping, planting trees, and harvesting wild foods. All these small acts that, together, add up to a strong, sovereign food system that nourishes our people physically, spiritually, emotionally and culturally.

Save the date! As the harvest season winds down and we start already dreaming of next year, please join us for two exciting events!

The annual Siċaŋġu Harvest Market Fall Bash will be held on Wednesday, October 7. It'll be in front of the Turtle Creek Crossing store and will feature face painting, pumpkin painting, a pie contest, cornhole and a "best fall outfit" contest. We'll also have a buffalo distribution and our regular vendors. Come join us to say goodbye to the 2026 market season with a bang!

If you can't make the Fall Bash, no need to worry!

The next event is our Food Summit on October 22nd and 23rd. Once again, we're changing it up this year. On Thursday, October 22nd, there will be a community buffalo harvest at Wolak̇ota! All are welcome to attend. Participants will learn about the harvesting process and get to see the buffalo range!

On Friday, October 23rd, Food Summit activities will be out at the Todd County Fairgrounds. This day will include more workshops, things like seed saving, buffalo jerky, herbal winter medicine, decorating seed packets and pumpkin carving!

More information can be found on our Facebook event page.

We hope to see you can join us!
