Gardens and Farmers’ Markets, Oh My!

Here at Siċaŋġu Co, we love the long and busy days of summer. We hope your summer has been full of warm light, sunshine, and good adventures.

The Keya Wakpala Gardens are expanding! 🌱🌿

This is where a lot of our work started. The Keya Wakpala Gardens began 12 years ago after we heard that our community wanted more community gardens, greenhouses, and farmers’ market.

Since its birth, the Keya Wakpala Gardens have undergone a lot of change. A new pavilion shade, some high tunnels that got built and then got torn down, a geodesic greenhouse, chickens and ducks and many interns have helped bring this space to life.

One thing that hasn’t changed is its physical size. Ever since we planted the first seeds, the Keya Wakpala Gardens has covered one acre of land. But that’s going to change, and the garden is going to get a much needed and much deserved expansion.

Starting this summer, we’ll be working to make the Keya Wakpala Gardens up to 8 acres! We’re starting first with the chickens – building a solid, secure coop that will keep them warm, cool, dry, and safe throughout the entire year. After that, we’ll build more greenhouses that will increase winter-growing capacity.

When it’s all said and done, the expanded garden will have a nursery, an orchard, berries, multiple greenhouses, an outdoor kitchen, a new community education space, and more.

Food is at the center of what we do and a unifying force. We believe that, to be sovereign, we must be food sovereign.

We’re so excited for the garden to be growing in a way that is reflective of our community and our work. Stay tuned for more updates as they happen!

National Farmers' Market Week! 🧺

Join us in celebrating National Farmers’ Market Week, which runs from August 2 – 8. We’ll be having some sort of workshop/activity at each market that week!

If you don’t live in Rosebud, we hope you find and visit a farmers’ market near you!

Farmers’ markets are more than just a place to buy food. They are a place for the community to come together and help connect local producers with consumers. Shopping at a farmers' market reduces your carbon footprint and supports small(er) businesses. Feel free to take a selfie and tag us (@sicanguco) when you visit a farmers’ market!
