Birthing Initiative Project Coordinator
Job Summary
The Birthing Initiative Project Coordinator supports the development of a culturally grounded birthing support system rooted in Lakota values, traditions, and community relationships. This role will help lay the foundation for the Sicangu Birthing Initiative, which aims to address critical gaps in maternal care on the Rosebud Reservation, uplift traditional knowledge, and ensure expecting relatives have safe, culturally aligned support throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery.
The coordinator will work closely with health networks (physicians, nurses, doulas, and midwives), and tribal programs. This position will support the planning of listening sessions, partnership coordination, community engagement, and data collection for the initiative’s needs assessment and landscape report.
Key Responsibilities
Support Needs Assessment & Community Engagement
● Plan and coordinate listening sessions, ensuring food, venue setup, and onsite childcare.
● Lead implementation of needs assessment and data collection
● Help document challenges faced by expecting families
● Help compile and summarize key themes
● Collect community insight and data.
● Interviewing elders/culture bearers to build relationships and gather data.
● Compile monthly reports
General Program & Administrative Support
● Assist with postpartum follow-up support.
● Support coordination with tribal programs.
● Maintain detailed documentation
● Assist at community events, outreach, and communication materials.
● Travel to other traditional birthing sites in Indian Country.
● Maintain inventory, packing lists, distribution tracking, and storage needs.
Required Skills & Qualifications
● Experience in community engagement, event planning, or program coordination.
● Understanding of Lakota culture, family roles, and community dynamics.
● Strong communication skills with the ability to work respectfully across families, elders, doulas, and health professionals.
● Ability to manage multiple tasks, schedules, and deadlines.
● Comfortable facilitating group conversations and community listening sessions.
● Valid driver’s license and ability to travel across the Rosebud Reservation.
● Ability to work some evenings/weekends as needed for community events.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
● Experience with data collection, surveys, or community assessments.
● Experience working with tribal programs and health systems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
● This position is based on the Rosebud Reservation.
● Requires travel to community sessions, meetings, and outreach events.
● Flexibility to work evening or weekend hours to support community needs.
● Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. for event setup, supply transport, or birthing kit assembly.
● Work is performed in office settings, community buildings, outdoor events, and occasionally in homes during outreach.
● Requires extended periods of sitting, driving, standing, and facilitating conversations.
Compensation & Benefits
● Salary Range: $37,440- $41,600
